GIC Launches “Symbols of Terror” to Strengthen Public Safety in Canada

The Global Imams Council (GIC) is proud to announce the launch of “Symbols of Terror,” a comprehensive guidebook developed to assist Canadian law enforcement, community leaders, and the general public in quickly and accurately identifying and understanding the flags and logos used by terrorist-designated Islamist groups, based on the current official list of terrorist entities in Canada.

Visual symbols such as flags carry powerful messages and are often used to communicate allegiance, demonstrate strength, intimidate opponents, terrorize communities, or assert political and religious claims. Misinterpreting these symbols can lead to unnecessary fear or wrongful suspicion, while failing to recognize genuine threats can compromise community safety. This guide aims to strike a balance by focusing exclusively on organizations officially designated as Islamist terrorist groups by the Canadian government, ensuring accuracy and avoiding mislabeling.

The “Symbols of Terror” guide is part of the Global Imams Council’s broader mission to promote informed awareness, counter misinformation, and equip communities and authorities with factual, verified information. By presenting these symbols within an academic and law-enforcement framework, the GIC seeks to prevent misuse of sacred imagery and protect the integrity of peaceful Muslim communities who reject extremism in all its forms.

This publication reinforces Canada’s model of partnership between faith-based leadership and public institutions in addressing radicalization, promoting education, and strengthening national security through knowledge and transparency.

The Global Imams Council remains steadfast in its commitment to countering extremism and advancing peace, both in Canada and internationally.
