Peace

It Begins With Understanding, and Flourishes in Unity

We believe that peace within society is vital for human security, economic development, social cohesion, political stability, and human rights. It requires a commitment from not only faith leaders, but also influential individuals from all areas of society, communities, governments, and civil society organizations to work together towards common goals, promoting understanding, dialogue, coexistence and respect.

The Global Imams Council considers advocating for peace between the adherents of all faiths an essential aspect of building a more harmonious and inclusive society. Conflicts based on religious differences have been a persistent challenge throughout history, leading to violence, discrimination, and exclusion. Here are five ways The GIC establishes peace within society:

  1. Promoting Interfaith Dialogue: The GIC breaks down stereotypes and fosters mutual respect. Interfaith dialogues hosted by the GIC create a space for people of different faiths to share their beliefs and experiences and find common ground.
  2. Encouraging Religious Literacy: The GIC encourages religious literacy to help combat misconceptions and misunderstandings about different faiths. This includes the promotion of resources and programs that provide accurate and nuanced information about different religions and their practices.
  3. Advocating for Religious Freedom: The GIC supports the right of individuals to practice their faith without fear of persecution or discrimination. We emphasize that governments and civil society organizations should work to protect the rights of minority religions and ensure that everyone has the freedom to worship as they choose.
  4. Supporting Peacebuilding Initiatives: The GIC helps create a culture of peace and reconciliation between different religious communities. These include programs that promote dialogue, conflict resolution, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. The GIC is a developer of the Culture of Peace Curriculum in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Coalition for Global Ethics, and a partner to The Peace Project in Tbilisi, Georgia.
  5. Combating Hate Speech and Extremism: The GIC helps prevent the spread of violent ideologies that target religious minorities both in the East and West. We strive to build resilience to extremist messaging, and support community-based initiatives that promote understanding and respect.
