On the 4th of December 2024, the GIC held a press conference at the National Press Theatre, Parliament Hill, and conducted media interviews throughout the day.
In the afternoon, the GIC hosted a successful symposium in collaboration with the Parliamentary Centre dedicated to: “Realizing the Vision of the Abraham Accords: Building a Future of Mutual Acceptance, Peaceful Co-existence, and Collaboration.”
The event brought together influential parliamentarians, thought leaders, and religious figures to discuss the critical need for dialogue and co-operation in the Middle East and beyond, and the role the historic 2020 Abraham Accords play in a future of true normalization and peace between the Abrahamic Faiths.
The symposium highlighted the opportunities for Canada to play a pivotal role in promoting peace and interfaith harmony, both within its borders and internationally. The discussions underlined the critical need for continued dialogue and collaboration to address regional conflicts and their global repercussions. As the Abraham Accords gain renewed relevance in the wake of the US elections and recent regional developments, Canada stands uniquely positioned to lead by example, advancing the values of peace, mutual recognition, and peaceful co- existence on the world stage.
The symposium also addressed the central role the tenets of the Abrahamic faiths have played in the formation and lasting success of the Abraham Accords even at a time of unprecedented turbulence. The GIC reiterated its commitment to the true principles of Islam, our rejection of Islamism, and noted our active participation in the Abraham Accords ecosystem as the Islamic body tasked with the development and implementation of a Culture of Peace Educational Curriculum that will accompany the Accords. The speakers, in turn, acknowledged our unique position as the authoritative clerical body able to bring the Abraham Accords ethos to Canada through engagement with government, faith leaders, civic society, and people-to-people community building.
Participants witnessed the signing of the GIC Ottawa Declaration, a landmark document that affirms the GIC’s commitment to the principles of the Abraham Accords—mutual recognition, peaceful co-existence, and interfaith cooperation.
