The Global Imams Council (GIC) commends the Wien Museum for its initiative to host a three-part Summer Academy dedicated to exploring Islamic heritage in Vienna. This thoughtful and timely endeavor reflects a commitment to fostering understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural tapestry that has shaped Austria’s capital city.

The first session of the Summer Academy, focusing on the fascination with the “Orient” and the examination of objects collected throughout history, is a commendable step towards bridging the gap between different cultures and narratives. By shedding light on the historical interactions and shared experiences between the Islamic world and Vienna, the museum is helping to dismantle misconceptions and stereotypes that have too often led to a sense of division.

The Global Imams Council particularly appreciates the Academy’s focus on identifying and discussing the traces of Islamic heritage present in Vienna’s public spaces. This effort highlights the longstanding contributions of Muslim communities to the cultural and historical fabric of Vienna, challenging the notion of Muslims as the “other” and emphasizing the deep-rooted connections that exist. Such initiatives are vital in countering narratives of alienation and promoting a message of inclusivity and shared heritage.

The third and final event, concentrating on the aesthetics of Islamic heritage, including calligraphy and arabesques, will offer a unique insight into the artistic and intellectual traditions that have flourished within the Islamic world. By celebrating these elements, the Wien Museum is not only preserving history but also showcasing the beauty and diversity of Islamic art and culture.

The GIC strongly supports endeavors like the Wien Museum’s Summer Academy, which play a crucial role in fostering intercultural dialogue and mutual respect. In a time when discussions about migration and cultural integration can be fraught with misunderstanding, initiatives that highlight the commonalities and contributions of all communities are more important than ever.

We hope that this Summer Academy will inspire other cultural institutions around the world to recognize and celebrate the diverse heritage that contributes to the rich tapestry of their own societies. The Global Imams Council remains committed to supporting efforts that promote peace, understanding, and cooperation among all faiths and cultures.
